Vacations and holidays mean travel which, although fun, can often prompt a number of health problems. For minor health problems, aromatherapy can be used. Several essential oils have properties which help relieve the symptoms of travel problems such as sickness, insect bites and sun burn. With a little bit of knowledge and practice, essential oils help prevent minor problems from ruining a vacation.
Essential Oils for Travel Sickness
Travel sickness, whether in a car, on a boat or on a plane, can be helped with the use of peppermint and ginger essential oils. Peppermint essential oil is particularly calming for the stomach. In addition, ginger essential oil is said to be particularly effective for helping relieve sea sickness. Inhale the essential oils from a tissue, or combine with a carrier oil or lotion prior to the journey, and rub the stomach and upper abdomen with it.
Essential Oils for Jet Lag
Jet lag occurs after a long haul flight. The difference in time zones knocks the body clock out of synchronization. Use grapefruit essential oil on arrival to help keep the mind focused and alert while adjusting to the different time zone. In addition, use lavender and geranium essential oils, either in a bath or in a lotion, to relax before going to bed and to help induce sleep. Peppermint essential oil can also be used in the morning to stimulate the mind.
Essential Oils for Minor Stomach Upsets
Minor stomach upsets often occur on vacation due to different food and a change in water. Peppermint and ginger essential oils help relieve the symptoms of minor stomach upsets. In addition, lemon essential oil can be used to treat acidic disorders. Prepare a carrier lotion or oil with the appropriate essential oils before traveling.
Essential Oils for Sun Burn
Too much sun on vacation can cause sun burn with soreness, redness and inflammation. Take protection against the intense heat and sun. However, sun burn can be soothed with lavender, roman chamomile, peppermint and geranium essential oils. Combine the appropriate essential oils in a white lotion base, which is more soothing than a carrier oil, and apply to the affected areas with care.
Essential Oils for Insect Bites
Depending on location in the world, there are various insects which can cause painful bites on vacation; these include mosquitoes. Use citronella and lemongrass essential oils to prevent insect bites either in a carrier oil base or in a spray. Lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus and geranium essential oils can be used to relieve bites. Combine one or more of these essential oils in a white lotion base and apply to the affected area.
Cautions for Using Aromatherapy for Travel
Essential oils in aromatherapy use for travel should be combined together in a carrier oil or carrier lotion base before applying to the skin. Check with the airline before flying as to the specific allowances for carrying liquids in hand luggage (if allowed); otherwise, essential oils and blends may have to be packed into checked-in luggage.
Neat essential oils can be inhaled from a tissue but use sparingly; one or two drops is usually sufficient. If inexperienced in the use of essential oils in aromatherapy consult a qualified professional. In addition, pay attention to any contraindications for use of a specific essential oil for a particular problem or circumstance.
